Questions with a Cobra: Ciaran Jaras

Name: Ciaran Jaras
Age: 22
Nationality: British
Occupation: Student
Position: Stand Off

When did you first learn about rugby league?
I was born into it really – my dad is a big fan. In fact, some of my earliest memories are of disappointing, rain-filled afternoons on terraces somewhere in the north of England.

How did you become a Cobra?
I’d been living in Amsterdam for a while. I’d been dragged along by some friends to watch a union game (I must’ve been at a loose end) in an Irish bar. I went to the gents and noticed a poster promoting the Cobras. I got in touch through Facebook and the rest is history…

Do you support a professional team?
Widnes Vikings, for my sins. We have an up-and-down relationship, but they are the true love of my life.

Which team do you look forward to playing the most and why?
Rotterdam Pitbulls. It’s always a tough game but they’re usually the team to beat, so it’s a good test for us.

What is your personal goal this season?
Put a solid, legal hit on someone. I’ve always admired the people that can smash someone with being penalised. It’s an art.

When did you last score a try?
I don’t really take note of those things. As long as the team is winning I’m happy.
(Joking. It’s been a while…)

Do you have an opposing player that you love to play against or have a rivalry with?
Benji from Harderwijk. As a fan of the game, it’s just entertaining to watch what he does on the field. As long as he’s not making me look like a mug, I like playing against him.

If you had to be one of the other Cobras for a week, who would it be and why?
Dom. The guy tells some great stories (which can’t be repeated on here), but I’m sure he’s got some even better ones hidden away. I’d make it my mission to hear them.

What was your most embarrassing moment on the field?
A couple of years ago against Den Haag. Trying to throw a miracle, four man cut-out pass to the winger, but the ball ended up by the clubhouse.

What was your best one?
Beating Harderwijk in round two last year. I’d only moved back from Singapore about 12 hours before the game, so I was feeling rough. But I remember it was a pretty sweet feeling after the game with the lads.

Which cobra is the funniest?
Daan. His sense of humour is probably a bit twisted for some people, but I wouldn’t have him any other way.

Which Cobra is most likely to avoid paying for a round?
I’m pretty good at it. Just forget your wallet at home… easy.

Which training drill do you dread the most?
Anything that involves running, press-ups, sit-ups, squats, tackling or wrestling.
Give me a game of walking touch any day.

Do you have a nickname?
Tripod. I’m not sure why though.

How would you describe yourself in one word?
Anti-KevinBrown
